چکیده

This paper reports the results of perception tests administered to speakers of Japanese as part of a cross-language investigation of how voice quality and f0 combine in the signalling of affect. Three types of synthesised stimuli were presented: (1) ‘VQ only’ involving variations in voice quality and a neutral f0; (2) ‘f0 only’, with different f0 contours and modal voice; and (3) combined ‘VQ + f0’ stimuli, where combinations of (1) and (2) were employed. Overall, stimuli involving voice quality variation (1 and 3) proved to be most consistently associated with affect. In series (2) only stimuli with very high f0 yielded high affective ratings. Some striking differences emerge in the ratings obtained for Japanese subjects compared to those obtained for speakers of Hiberno-English [7], suggesting that the generation of expressive speech synthesis will need to be sensitive to language specific uses of the voice.

Cross-Cultural Differences in the Processing of Non-Verbal Affective Vocalizations by Japanese and Canadian Listeners

The Montreal Affective Voices (MAVs) consist of a database of non-verbal affect bursts portrayed by Canadian actors, and high recognitions accuracies were observed in Canadian listeners. Whether listeners from other cultures would be as accurate is unclear. We tested for cross-cultural differences in perception of the MAVs: Japanese listeners were asked to rate the MAVs on several affective dim...

Voice-to-Affect Mapping: Inferences on Language Voice Baseline Settings

Modulations of the voice convey affect, and the precise mapping of voice-to-affect may vary for different languages. However, affect-related modulations occur relative to the baseline affect-neutral voice, which tends to differ from language to language. Little is known about the characteristic long-term voice settings for different languages, and how they influence the use of voice quality to ...

Voice Quality Variation and the Perception of Affect: Continuous or Categorical?

This paper explores the mapping of voice quality to affect, for a synthesised tense – lax voice continuum. Two questions are of interest. Firstly, over such a continuum, do listeners’ attributions of affect change in a continuous or in a more categorical way? Secondly, might discreetly different affects emerge at different points in the continuum: specifically, might a moderately tense voice cu...

The role of voice quality in communicating emotion, mood and attitude

This paper explores the role of voice quality in the communication of emotions, moods and attitudes. Listeners reactions to an utterance synthesised with seven different voice qualities were elicited in terms of pairs of opposing affective attributes. The voice qualities included harsh voice, tense voice, modal voice, breathy voice, whispery voice, creaky voice and lax–creaky voice. These were ...

Personalized Quantification of Voice Attractiveness in Multidimensional Merit Space

Voice attractiveness is an indicator which is somehow objective and somehow subjective. It would be helpful to assume that each voice has its own attractiveness. However, the paired comparison results of human listeners sometimes include inconsistency. In this paper, we propose a multidimensional mapping scheme of voice attractiveness, which explains the existence of objective merit values of v...
